• Having thorough knowledge in the chosen core subjects and possess the specific skills of the discipline
• Able to apply numerical and analytical skills to gather and analyze data and information scientifically, draw inferences and arrive at the conclusion, and
• Having intellectual skills with the ability for creative, critical and analytical and problem solving skills
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) represent the expectations of the programme for its students 3 years after graduation in Bachelor of Arts Degree offered by the Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna. Graduates will be able to:
PO 1: Collect, analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data;
PO 2: Demonstrate problem-solving skills in the areas of study;
PO 3: Develop arguments and make sound judgments in accordance with basic theories and concepts of the areas of study;
PO 4: Present information, ideas, and concepts efficiently and effectively;
PO 5: Apply knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles of the areas of study;
PO 6: Acquire new competencies that will enable them to assume major responsibilities;
PO 7: Demonstrate transferable skills including ICT skills necessary for employment;
PO 8: Undertake further training and develop additional skills that will enable them to make sound decisions;
PO 9: Exercise initiative, personal responsibility, and accountability;
PO 10: Exercise leadership in the professional environment/workplace; and,
PO 11: Demonstrate positive attitudes and social responsibility.
On successful completion of the BA Honors in Art History, graduates should be able to have an independent critical engagement with visual art and visual culture, to theoretically situate changing concepts and approaches of art, read visual art within its wider socio-political context and develop the tools to communicate readings and research findings. They are expected to be able to examine and understand the full breadth of issues surrounding the social, and ethical concerns associated with the art world. Graduates will gain skills and experience that will prepare them for careers in art history, art education and heritage industry.
Graduates of BA (Hons) in Art History programme will possess the following attributes:
PLO 1: Assess artifacts from global and local context, in association with artists, styles, methods, medium, chronology and cultural geography.
PLO 2: Interpret the changing meaning of a work of art in connection with the visual, visuality and viewership.
PLO 3: Appreciate work of art
PLO 4: Develop an effective knowledge of visual vocabulary appropriate for careers in the visual studies, heritage industry and art pedagogy.
PLO 5: Evaluate the aesthetic, historical, social, and ethical significance of contemporary visual practices in comparison with the art practice of modern and premodern periods.
PLO 6: Analyze major debates and theories that have shaped the discipline of art history and studies of visual culture.
PLO 7: Construct plausible methods of analysis in the field of art history and visual culture.
PLO 8: Communicate ideas using visual, oral, and written arguments and presentation modeled on the professional standards presently applied in the discipline.
PLO 9: Demonstrate a greater tolerance of diversity in multi-cultural society, through exposure to multiple readings of artistic objects and cultural histories.
PLO 10: Examine the full breadth of issues surrounding the social, and ethical concerns associated with the art world.
PLO 11: Demonstrate positive attitudes and social responsibility.
PLO 12: Maintain a good mindset including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
PLO 13: Engage in lifelong learning.
