The Department is one of the pioneer institutions in Sri Lanka and in South Asia in\u00a0teaching and\u00a0researching visual art and visual culture. It offers a full-fledged\u00a0Bachelor of Arts Honours degree\u00a0programme in Art History and provides research\u00a0guidance to postgraduate students, who\u00a0are enrolled into the Faculty of Graduate\u00a0Studies, University of Jaffna. The Department of Fine\u00a0Arts was established at the\u00a0University of Jaffna in 1982 under the headship of Prof. K.\u00a0Indrapala, an eminent\u00a0historian and archaeologist with a view to accommodating the Ramanathan Academy of\u00a0Fine Arts\u00a0(RAFA) into the university system. In 1991, with the creation of the Department of\u00a0Music\u00a0and Department of Dance, RAFA was separated from the Department of Fine\u00a0Arts.\u00a0Since the study of local cultures and promotion of local artistic traditions have\u00a0been one of the\u00a0priorities of the University of Jaffna and aspirations of the local\u00a0community, the Department\u00a0began to offer course units in Fine Arts (Art History) for the Bachelor of Arts general degree\u00a0programme from 1985. In 1991, a full-fledged\u00a0Honours degree programme in Fine Arts became\u00a0a reality. The Fine Arts program,\u00a0while being responsive to the disciplinary changes occurring\u00a0globally in the field of\u00a0visual studies and art history, has actively engaged with the studies of\u00a0local visual\u00a0culture as well as traditional and contemporary art practices of South Asia. Later,\u00a0in\u00a0the year 2020, the Fine Arts study programme was renamed as Art History with the\u00a0approval of\u00a0the UGC so as to match similar study programmes in the areas of visual\u00a0art and visual culture\u00a0offered by universities across the world and give a clear\u00a0direction to the graduates as regards the\u00a0career paths available to them.\u00a0The\u00a0Bachelor of Arts Honours in Art History degree programme was designed to\u00a0encourage\u00a0students to develop a critical understanding of works of art and visual\u00a0culture, to examine the\u00a0changing historical conceptions of art and the artist, and to\u00a0explore visual arts in their wider\u00a0cultural and political contexts. Those who read for\u00a0this degree will gain skills and experience that\u00a0will prepare them for career\u00a0destinations in art history, museology, art management, curation, art\u00a0education and\u00a0heritage industry.\u00a0<\/p>
